In underserved communities across the South West Region of Cameroon, youth face a steep double burden: severe unemployment and a widening digital divide. Traditional education and traditional vocational training often focus on saturated markets, leaving bright young people without practical pathways to earning a living. Access to high-end laptops or expensive tech hardware remains a luxury out of reach for most.

At Action Tech—the specialized technology division of United Action for Children (UAC)—we are changing this narrative. We are establishing Buea’s first dedicated AI Community Lab, a modern innovation space engineered to transform standard mobile phones and cutting-edge artificial intelligence into engines of economic opportunity.

A Modern Workspace Built for Real-World Tech

The AI Community Lab is designed to remove the physical and technological barriers that hold back talented youth. Located in Buea, this hub provides a safe, fully equipped, and collaborative safe space where young people—especially internally displaced young women and vulnerable girls—can transition from digital consumers to digital creators.

• Starlink Satellite Internet: High-speed, uninterrupted connectivity ensures trainees have seamless access to global AI models, cloud repositories, and online learning platforms.

• Solar-Powered Uptime: Dedicated power redundancy systems protect the lab from regional grid outages, guaranteeing reliable access to workstations and digital tools.

• Workstation & Production Infrastructure: Equipped with admin management laptops, Android testing tablets, and industrial color printing facilities to immediately bring digital designs into physical reality.

Practical AI Skills: Turning Smartphones into Business Tools

Our curriculum bypasses the need for high-cost personal computers. By teaching mobile-first AI workflows, we demonstrate how low-cost smartphones can be turned into full-fledged design offices.

1. Mobile AI Visual Design & Prompt Engineering: Trainees master tools to generate high-quality vector logos, social media visual assets, promotional flyers, and product packaging proofs.

2. AI Photography & Media Editing: Students learn image restoration, background generation, digital styling, and high-end photo enhancement directly on mobile devices.

3. Digital Micro-Entrepreneurship: Masterclasses cover digital marketing, online portfolio creation, pricing freelance services, and managing digital payments.

Bridge to the Community: The Farmer-Designer Exchange

Technology is most effective when it solves local problems. The AI Community Lab directly integrates our graduates into the regional economy through targeted community exchanges:

• Agricultural Branding Integration: Trainees are paired with local smallholders, farm cooperatives, and agricultural producers. They design custom packaging labels, brand identities, and digital ad campaigns for products like cassava, maize, and processed foods.

• Boosting Farm Profitability: Modern branding helps local farmers command higher market prices and expand their reach, while giving our trainees real-world, paid portfolio experience.
