Empowering Vulnerable Young Women Through Grassroots Digital Innovation
In Cameroon, youth unemployment is an acute social and economic crisis. Every day, thousands of young girls walk the streets without employment, access to technical training, or viable paths toward financial stability. Facing severe socio-economic hardships, many find themselves pushed into precarious, exploitative situations simply to survive.
The AI Community Hub Program, established by United Action for Children (UAC) Cameroon, was created to break this cycle. We believe that lack of access to high-end hardware should never be a barrier to human potential. By meeting marginalized youth where they are, we equip vulnerable young women from remote communities with market-ready, practical creative skills that translate directly into self-reliance, dignity, and sustainable local livelihoods.
Our Story & Proof of Concept
The initiative began with a pragmatic question: How can we bypass the prohibitive costs of laptops and formal computer labs to provide immediate, high-value skills to young women?
To answer this, UAC designed and launched an intensive Mobile-First AI Graphic Design Pilot:
- The Cohort: 15 vulnerable young girls from remote communities were selected to receive 100% free, hands-on training.
- The Methodology: Training focused on practical mobile AI workflows, visual storytelling, and graphic design using strictly smartphones.
- The Outcome: All 15 participants graduated and immediately launched their own independent branding and media services. Today, they design promotional flyers, logos, and digital marketing materials for local shops and micro-enterprises, earning independent, sustainable incomes using only their mobile devices.
Building on this proven proof of concept, we are expanding our reach to train our next intake of 25 registered young girls who are currently waiting for structured training access.
The AI Community Training Hub
To transform this mobile-first success into a permanent, scalable institution, UAC is establishing a dedicated AI Community Training Hub in Buea, Southwest Region of Cameroon.
The Hub is designed to serve as both an incubator and a protective sanctuary:
- Safe Creative Space: A secure, collaborative environment where young women can gather, share ideas, network, and organize without fear or financial vulnerability.
- Transition to Advanced Computing: While smartphones offer an accessible starting point, our hub integrates computer workstations to help students transition into professional vector design, document processing, typography, and international freelancing platforms.
- Resilient Infrastructure: Overcoming local systemic challenges by providing stable solar/inverter backup power, high-speed connectivity, and curated offline educational libraries.
- Mentorship & Peer Leadership: Pilot graduates return as peer-mentors to guide incoming students, reinforcing leadership and community solidarity.

Leadership & Governance
The AI Community Hub is operated by United Action for Children (UAC) Cameroon, an accredited non-profit organization dedicated to youth development, child protection, and community empowerment in Cameroon. Technical architecture and curriculum execution are led by our internal I.T. and community development teams, ensuring operational integrity, strict equipment care, and measurable community outcomes.
